Tavistock Ladies AFC have faced an unlucky start to this season as a result of injuries, and this week served the team no favours as the Ladies made the lengthy journey to Axminster with only ten players.

Unfortunately the Ladies were beaten 6-2 and despite inconsistency in their performance during the first half, the Ladies displayed the team spirit that Tavistock are renowned and admired for, as they attempted a second-half come back.

Jess Turner and Ali Hurley put in an exceptional performance in mid-field, with goals scored by Robyn Hammond and Katie Glasspoole and several near misses by Beccy Gordon. Kirsty Jones' stoic performance further enhanced the quality of Tavistocks game, and there were some great saves by mid-fielder Rachael Kelly in her role as temporary keeper.

Sheer bad luck is preventing Tavistock Ladies from gaining a win; with the team's determination this is surely due to turn.

Match Report 13/09/09

Tavistock Ladies were overjoyed with their 3-1 victory in Sunday’s first game of the season, led by Captain Donna Hone against visitors Phoenix Club.

The Ladies maintained possession throughout much of the first half yet frustratingly failed to reach the back of the net. Phoenix managed to break away and put their only goal of the match past great new signing Della Maloney, resulting in a half time score of 0-1.

Tavistock dominated the second half of the game putting a great deal of pressure on Phoenix defence. Pre-season injuries to some of the Tavistock players enabled the new additions in the team to show their worth; fantastic defending from Katie Glasspoole and Lisa Curtis, and great goals in quick succession from Candy Capeling, Beccy Gordon and our old favourite Winger Weeks.

Tavistock Ladies played consistently good football throughout the game despite the glorious sunshine enjoyed by the spectators. Well done Ladies, the league is there for the taking.

Tavistock AFC Ladies get a great win . . . . . .Tavistock Ladies 4 - 3

Totnes and Dartington - Top played bottom in a 7 goal thriller. Tavistock started with most of the play going down the wings with Donna Hone and Kirsty Jones. All the hard work done by the wingers and the constant battling of Rachel Kelly saw chances go astray. After a very frustrating 15 minutes for a large crowd of supporters, a few doing the old Mexican wave in the new stands, Kelly and Jones linked up to put Blowey through who coolly slotted home. Play saw some hard challenges going in and when Jones put in a slightly late one a defender charged 15 yards to push her with both hands. The Ref continued play but the spectators were now on fire and got behind the Ladies who put together some great moves only to be thwarted at the final touch. T and D equalized when a fast striker shot through for a one on one. Becky Gordon joined play and using her speed ran through 3 defenders to put Tavistock back in the lead 2 minutes before half time. After a stern team talk by manager Mark Wickett, the girls came out fighting. The back four were strong and kept their line well. When Donna Weeks returned to play she made up for her near misses and put Tavistock further into the lead. The spectators got behind the girls and it wasn't long before Hone and Kelly linked up to put Weeks through for her second. However T and D didn't give up and on another one to one slotted the ball under an incoming Maloney. 4-2. It was shortly after that when Shaw moved into block, the ball bounced up and hit her on the shoulder. Much to everyone's surprise a penalty was awarded. Up trotted the T and D keeper who smashed it into the net. 4-3. The last 8 minutes were stressful but Hammond excelled and challenged hard to win the ball and take it out of the danger zone. Shaw, Crocker and Turner and Jo Webber fought for everything and the team played as a team and came out thoroughly deserved winners.
