A TAVISTOCK College student celebrated passing her grade 8 violin weeks after playing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

A level student Mia Thomas, part of Cornwall Youth Orchestra, travelled to London to accompany them in concert and a recording session.

“It’s something I really enjoy; it was a fantastic experience,” said Mia. “I’ve played violin by myself for about 14 years and it’s so different when you play with a big group of people.

“There are about 50 of us in the Cornwall Youth Orchestra and we meet three times per term for a residential weekend. We’ve performed in Truro Cathedral and around Cornwall.

“Because I’ve been playing so long it’s really good to finally pass grade 8 violin. I’m really happy.”

Mia plans to join a university orchestra when she begins studying medicine in September.
