Tavistock College's ESU speaking team: Annabel Longden, Saskia Sills, Flo Rodgers
Flo Rodgers beat off competition from other schools including Kelly College and Devonport High School for Boys to win the accolade in the competition hosted by the English Speaking Union’s (ESU) Plymouth and District branch.
Flo Rodgers, Annabel Longden and Saskia Sills represented Tavistock College, speaking on the topic ‘moderation is boring’.
ESU regional organiser Muriel Harrison commented: “Flo spoke clearly and with conviction about going for the best you can do.
“She gave a lively presentation with passion, good humour and a natural style. Her responses to questioning indicated a breadth of knowledge and good research.”
Saskia said it had been a really good experience for the students.
“We went to Kelly College and as the chair I had to set the time and introduce everyone,” she continued. “Flo was amazing as our speaker and Annabel was brilliant questioning the opposing speaker.”
Tavistock College placed third overall, with Eggbuckland Community College winning the debate.
The students will build on their public speaking skills in the Youth Speaks competition and are determined to go back and win the ESU debate next year.
Teacher Sally Hubbard said: “They were exceptional and thoroughly enjoyed their first foray into this brilliantly run debate.
“We’ve always performed very well in Youth Speaks so we’re looking to broaden our public speaking skills through this and the Oxford Debating Competition.
“Students from all years will also be taking part in friendly debating evenings with Kelly College.”
The ESU is a non-political forum designed to promote international friendship and understanding through the English language. The organisation encourages young people to acquire public speaking and debating skills and to extend their horizons through international exchanges, scholarships and internships.
