DEVON County Council has launched an investigation after a school skiing trip was cancelled over safety fears.
Tavistock College head Helen Salmon said she scrapped the trip because of uncertainty from tour operator Skiing Europe that a hotel was booked.
Bosses at Devon-based Skiing Europe have denied the allegation, and claimed a hotel was ready and waiting for the children.
More than 110 students were told of the cancellation minutes before coaches were due to leave the school for Switzerland on Friday.
A Devon County Council spokesman said: “We are investigating as the local education authority and will be working with the college, which is taking legal advice.”
It is understood the investigation will involve the council’s legal department, Trading Standards and the education department’s outdoor pursuits advisors.
The trip had cost around £800 per pupil, plus equipment costs.
Headteacher Helen Salmon has said: “I’m desperately sorry for the parents and children. It was a very difficult decision and, in terms of safety, we were certain it was the right one.”
