Is Tavistock getting to big

I am afraid so. With the addition of more and more housing stock Tavistock will grow to big for the small town feel. That is unless it is able to protect its shopping experience. Tavistock people can do this is by supporting its local shops. Difficult when purse strings are stretched to the limit buts whats more important spending less or keeping a way of life. How sad to see a major coffee seller set up shop, a faceless profit making entity which is here for your money, I am not saying that all shops are not, but most of Tavistock old school shops do have a face a personality. Very few towns where super business has moved into now have a green grocer and a butcher, worth bearing in mind, I have experienced the loss and it never comes back once its gone.

Lidle does give people on a budget a good place to shop and being out of town itt does not have a great impact on the town. However I gues the point is it takes business away from the smaller traditional shops in Tavistock.
My real concern is that if we can we should support our local shops, also we should be asking local government to support the smaller retailer by compensating business rates etc. The supermarkets should be challenged to cotribute also. If this does not happen we will be left with a high street of fast food and 99p stores and late night bars. Local government will loose visitors, which will hit thier pockets as we move away to places that maintain traditional charachters.
Its happening now and unfortunatly I have no idea how it can be stopped.

ReportI moved to Tavistock 3 years ago - why?
The town I grew up in got to big. Within 25 years the council had allowed more and more developments, arcades and new shopping areas to created. New homes looked futuristic against the grand Georgian backdrop the town had - They called it progress, I called it sacrilege! Yet we see it going on in every town, the high streets of which look the same as any other.
Now you might think I’m a person of retirement age just having a nag, but I’m actually in my early 40’s.
My home town was ruined. I moved here because Tavistock is special, don’t let it get out of hand - keep it unique, keep it's heritage and keep it’s identity and people will travel wide and far to see it!
