TAVISTOCK College sixth form students are volunteering their time and muscle to help clean up a primary school’s wildlife garden.

Clara Wood, David Roden, Will Howe, Josie Stephenson, Rachel Allen, Daniel Douglas and Alex Meyer have teamed up with environmental group Westden to work at Tavistock Community Primary School.

The volunteers made safe an area which was out of bounds due to health and safety fears and are now ready to develop it further.

Clara said: “I got in touch with Westden because I missed out when my tutor group helped clean up the Molly Owen Centre’s garden.

“We made a start on Tavistock Primary’s wildlife area and picked up rubbish. We’re hoping to go back down to finish it off and carry on maintaining it.”

Josie explained it would be used as a community space.

“Children from the school can use it, but it will also be a restful place where the community can mix,” she added. “They’re also hoping to use it as a curriculum area and do lessons out there.”

Daniel said he had found volunteering fun and wanted to stay involved after he decided to take part because it was his primary school and he wanted to help the community.

The event was run by Maxim Laithwaite and Sue Fisher from Westden as part the Schools' Community Landscape Network (CLaN) - an ongoing project designed to help 15 schools across West Devon develop their outdoor landscapes.

Mr Laithwaite said it had been a great afternoon and they were very grateful for the sixth formers’ help.

He continued: “Westden would like to thank the volunteers for giving their time to help make the garden safe and accessible. The volunteer time can count towards the students' community scheme but most of the students have already achieved the total hours required and this event was extra. They also made a point of wanting to volunteer more in the future.”

Tavistock College students regularly volunteer in the community. They carry out activities ranging from beach clean-ups to helping in homes caring for older people.

If you have a volunteering opportunity you wish students to be involved with, please contact teacher Pete Keegan on 01822 614231.

Stand by to be amazed, albeit that I do not agree with the negative spin tag.

But I will and always have done, look deeper into what I read or have been told. I may go on to highlight or comment about some of those underlying issues.

The top two in this story are the future finances of Westden and the enforcement of littering laws. Both are of public concern and contribution.

It amazes me that anyone can put a negative spin on such a positive story!

Well done to all involved in the project.

Has Westden got much future? Will the lack of 'easy' money be their downfall?

Well done the Sixth Formers otherwise.

We should stop picking up litter in some areas and look at how its getting there and who is dropping it. Councils have great powers regarding this.Together with many other people no doubt, we would like them to be used now and again.
