TAVISTOCK College students have experienced history first hand thanks to kind donations of Tesco vouchers.

Year 9 students donned gas masks and Second World War uniforms purchased with the vouchers which parents and the local community contributed to the college.

History teacher Helen Harris said: “The vouchers provide wonderful extra resources. We chose a package of items you might find in an Anderson air raid shelter like gas masks, lanterns, tinned food and enamel pots and pans.

“We also received an evacuee’s suitcase with woolly cardigans, gloves, a balaclava and a letter from home, as well as soldiers’ uniforms.”

Mrs Harris said students thought it was wonderful to be able to put on a gas mask, see what a uniform tunic actually looked like and experience how the caps felt to wear.

“It brings history to life,” she added. “It gives them a taste of life in the Second World War in a way that lessons can’t normally do.”

Tavistock College collects vouchers from all supermarket schemes and staff and students are always grateful to receive donations.

The Second World War ended 65 years ago. But the evidence and affect remain for many. Endless rows of crosses in War Cemeteries. Missing generations of Fathers and Sons marked by Village, Town and City War Memorials. Thankfully even with high amounts of degeneration, they continue to be respected.

One must wonder why we went into an illegal and falsely documented War in Iraq and then go on to prop up a corrupt government in Afghanistan. To join the US in another Vietnam.

    Did we not learn anything?
