It was announced yesterday that Mutley Plain will be closed for seven weeks. Wales and West Utilities are set to dig up hundreds of metres of pipeline in essential repair work.
500 metres of old metal pipes are to be replaced with durable non-corroding plastic pipes which have a life span of over 80 years.
The project is due to start on 15th March, but the southbound road will remain open to general traffic until 22nd March. The plans are to introduce a two way traffic system to the northbound lane, which will remain open to buses.
Diversions will be clearly signposted and are expected to run via Outland Road and Alma Road.
Mike Miller, the Wales and West Utilities project supervisor said: "We have been working closely with Plymouth City Council and I have contacted local residents and businesses in the immediate vicinity to notify them of the impending work. Advance notice road signs are also being deployed, indicating that work will begin on Monday 15 March.”
The city's Cabinet member for transport, Kevin Wigens said: "Doing the work this month appeared to be the least worst option to us.
"No time is a good time to disrupt traffic, but we would rather they did it now than later in the year at the same time as the Gdynia Way road works.
"We reluctantly have to accept that this kind of work has to happen from time to time."

Pipe laying is far quicker then it ever was. This would not be a preventive measure. It will be essential. change. The alternative could be flooding and disruption that spans a far greater time limit than an organised renewal.
