West Devon has a new Borough Council as of Friday following the poll which saw around 21,600 people use their vote.

A total of 27 of 31 council seats were contested by 66 candidates.

Following the results, the political composition of the Borough Council is: Conservatives - 19 (11); Independents – 9 (9); Liberal Democrats – 3 (8); Others – 0 (3). * Figures in brackets show the political composition of the Borough Council prior to May 5, 2011

Following an extensive publicity campaign, the Borough Council issued just over 7,000 postal votes – around 16.5% of the electorate.

The overall turnout for this election was 51%.

Do you think the turn out was good? Why do you think nearly half the borough chose not to use their vote?

Large Political Parties do nothing to encourage people to actually vote. Because they know they can put anyone up for Election in their name and depending on the area - they will win on low turnout alone. This is poor democracy with many areas having a majority of non-voters. We need the addition of internet voting associated with a hard piece of identification and perhaps with serving a few adverts, spot prizes can be sponsored for each area (for voting).

I can't believe that 68% of the country thought that the ersults of the last general election were fair!! People are obviously not brave enough to change things. If more people had voted then we would have had more chance of the av being voted in. A lot of the people who said they didn't vote because they couldn't see the point surely would have voted for the av if they hadn't been bamboozled by the negative propaganda. That's the whole point! - It would have made them feel like there WAS a point in future.

I didn't bother voting. No point at all because the outcome wouldn't change.

This was a larger turn-out than 2007. Interest was fuelled by having a Party Political AV referendum at the same time. I just hope that matters such as Conservative Parking Meter Tax and more Tipping Tax and suchlike is not flagged through, by two tiers of local democracy. Now fully controlled by the Conservatives.
