Tavistock in 1086 - the first online copy of Domesday Book

Did you know that in 1086 Tavistock had seventy-nine households and was considered a very large town? It had twenty-three villagers, thirty-seven smallholders, sixteen slaves, and three cottagers.
I've just been looking at a really interesting website called 'Domesday Map' - a website that was put together last year using free available academic data from the original 1086 Domesday Book.
The site is still in the early stages, but it has some great historical information about town population, size, owners and more. Click here to view the page for Tavistock.

ReportHow times change - Tavistock is now not considered large enough. Let the 2011 Domesday Book show Urban Sprawl Plans and every space filled to its boundaries, courtesy of West Devon Borough Council.
