The essential guide to weddings in Tavistock

September is one of the most popular months for weddings so I’ve decided to put together a short guide to local venues and services. It’s by no means definitive, so please do feel free to add your own suggestions!

There’s an incredible amount to organise for your big day, so hopefully this list of local contacts will prove useful ....

Venues:

We live in such a beautiful area of the United Kingdom, that we are really spoilt for choice when it comes to idyllic wedding venues. Two Bridges, in Princetown offers a scenic and tranquil setting. The small stream nearby is a perfect setting for beautiful and unique wedding photos. Click here to visit their gallery.

If you want to stay in Tavistock itself then Browns have some excellent wedding packages on offer. They cater for a variety of needs and party sizes, so it’s worth checking their website out.

The Bedford Hotel also makes for a nice venue. They have a large walled garden to the rear, and have recently opened Gallery 26 – their new function room. Click here for photos.

It’s not a venue that springs to mind when you think ‘wedding’, but the Tavistock Town Hall is surprisingly popular. The hall itself is a fantastic size, and I can imagine it would look stunning when decorated. Click here to visit their website.

If you’re after a more luxurious venue then The Horn of Plenty should fit the bill. Click here to visit their website and request a brochure.

Cars:

There are a few wedding car hire services around Tavistock including Aavalon, 60’s Jaguar Cars, and Stars for Cars.

Photographers:

We are blessed with several very talented local photographers in Tavistock. Pick from Michael Marker Photography, Maggie McCall, Devon Bride Photography, and Anthony MosleyAavalon also offer a photography service.

Flowers:

Local companies include Flower Press, Wine & Roses, and Odds & Buds.

Caterers and Cakes:

We have The Tavistock Catering Company, Food Dreckly, and Jane’s Cakes. There are probably more, but I’ll leave that to you to add in the comments section :)

Rings:

John Baldwin is a local jeweller who opened the shop in Tavistock after the success of the Plymouth branch.  The quality of the jewellery is outstanding, and I would really recommend popping in to have a look and a chat.

We also have Scruples, Livingston’s, and R Dunthorne.

Dresses and accessories:

Check out Perfect and Elegant, and Amelia Rose Shoe Dying & Wedding Accessories.  My mother in law bought her wedding dress from No 13 some years back. I’m not sure whether they still sell them or not ... perhaps someone could let us know?

Invites:

Local firms include Ottery Press and Abbey Printing.

The Honeymoon:

Keep it local by using a Tavistock based travel agent. We have Newell’s, Astbury Travel, Going Places, Solar Holidays, and Thomas Cook.

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Would you recommend it to others?

There is so much involved when it comes to organising a wedding that this article could easily be five times as long! I’ve had to cut myself off, but if I’ve missed anything obvious then please let us know in the comments section.

As always, if you’ve used any of the fore mentioned services then please do leave your reviews in our business directory. It’s a great way of information sharing, and helps both local people and local businesses alike :)

A friend of mine had local band Under The Fingers play at their wedding. I would definately have them for mine! They've got a harp and a cello so their music is beautiful and very 'weddingy'.

I was married at St Gabriels, the very lovely and very picturesque church in the moorland village of Postbridge on Dartmoor, on my birthday 14 years ago, we had some of our photographs taken on the ancient Packhorse Clapper Bridge, while the Hunt that was going by, gave us some blasts on their hunting horns, I consider this to be the ideal romantic, Dartmoor Wedding.

St Gabriels was originally intended for a school and a schoolmaster's house, but it soon became used as a church and a church school. It was formerly known as Postbridge Church of England School.
