Which is the best school in Tavistock?

With the damning Ofsted report that Tavistock College received earlier in the year would you be happy to send your child there?

It was widely publicised that the school was rated as ‘inadequate’ at the Ofsted inspection in January, but have the steps taken by the college thus far, and this year’s glowing GCSE and and A-Level results done anything to sway the negative perception of the school?

At the monitoring inspection on 23rd June the schools progress since being subject to special measures was deemed to be satisfactory, but what do you, the residents of Tavistock think?

Do you know anyone that is attending the school? Are they happy with the level of education they’re receiving? Have you, or anyone you know, considered alternatives such as Kelly College or Callington Community School because of the present circumstances? And that opens up a whole other discussion .... which is better – private or public education? How much would you pay to ensure that your child receives the best education? Is it fair that money is even an issue?

And what about primary schools? We have a large and varied selection of primary schools within our local vicinity, so how can you tell which would be best for your child? What are the main elements to consider? Performance?  Location? Reputation? Facilities?

Tavistock has two independent primary schools - Mount House and Kelly College Prep School. The Tavistock based state primary schools are Tavistock Community, St Peter’s C of E Junior School, St Rumon’s C of E Infant School, and Whitchurch. We also have several neighbouring schools including Milton Abbot, Gunnislake, Delaware, Gulworthy, Lamerton, and Mary Tavy & Brentor. Did you attend any of these schools as a child? If so would you send your child there? I’m a diehard ‘Delawarian’ and would certainly consider that as an option for my children. It was a great school and I thoroughly enjoyed (almost) every minute of it :)

We added a new feature to the site earlier in the year and you can now view the league tables for our local schools. When ranked by the percentage of pupils achieving level four (the standard expected by the Government) in English, Maths, and Science, Gulworthy have come out on top, followed by Gunnislake, then St Peter’s C of E. Lamerton C of E, and Mary Tavy & Brentor have landed at the other end of the table. Are these the results you expected? Have a look and let us know what you think. How is your child’s school faring? Did/will you take this information into consideration when applying to schools?

Deciding which school to send your child to can be a massive decision, so if you have any info or comments that may help parents then please add them to the relevant school’s review section. You can visit our individual school listings through our Business Directory, or by clicking on the links above.

If you want an excellent Primary School you can not beat Gulworthy, rated the best Primary in Devon, and an excellent ofsted again. With small class sizes, wonderful staff and a friendly group of parents, its no surprise the school is doing so well.

Without doubt Tavistock College has problems. It is no good posting sanitised reports of joy. Disruptive behaviour appears to underpin those problems. Disengagement by those who are not there to learn or lack proper home guidance could be the cause. I do not believe that the Governors (those who have not resigned, left already) are in tune with the idea of public accountability. I am still not in favour of changing the Tavistock College Logo, modernising - yes, incorporating an Islamic Symbol - no. Nor in 'hoodie' uniforms. As a Member of the Public those and its reported failings are my concerns.
