The RICS have recently reported that house prices in the South West have fallen for the third consecutive month. Speaking to some of our local estate agents, it appears that Tavistock is much in line with the national picture.

According to research done by HomeCo Internet Property Ltd, the average house price in Tavistock has fallen by 19 per cent over the last four years. In September 2006 our average house price was £284,081, where as now it is £229,853. Duncan Cares from Ward & Chowen said: “House prices seem to be levelling off, but no one expects to see a rise this side of Christmas.”

Are you buying or selling a home locally? Let us know your thoughts on the current market. How have you been affected?

If you want to get a better idea of the local picture then www.home.co.uk is a useful site. They show how the average house price in Tavistock has changed over the last twelve months, and also have a fairly detailed price breakdown for properties that are currently on the market.

My Property Spy is another interesting website. They list all house sales and prices within the last six years.  You’ll have to sign up first, but it’s free and only takes a minute.

Has this dip in house prices affected you? My parents bought a house in Plymouth three and a half years ago when house prices were at their peak. They’re happy to rent it out to students at the moment, which is lucky because they certainly wouldn’t see a profit if they decided to sell now! Did you buy at the right or wrong time?

Also, we’ve had some recent discussion about the 700 new houses in Tavistock. If the plan goes ahead how do you think Tavistock’s housing market will be affected?

If you’re looking to buy or sell a property then you can either search through this website, or use one of the many estate agents in Tavistock. We have Ward & Chowen, Salisbury Henderson, FulfordsMiller & Son, D R Kivell & Partners, and Mansbridge & Balment.

As always, please do let us know about your experiences with any of the fore mentioned estate agents through the review section of our business directory.
