Tavistock has held an annual Goose Fair since the early 12th century. Originally the fair was for trading livestock, but over the years it has developed into more of a social event, with market stalls, food and drink, entertainment and a funfair which remains open throughout the evening.
In an attempt to revive the more traditional side of 'Goosey Fair', a free Open Day is now held annually at Tavistock Livestock Centre, Whitchurch Road, on Goose Fair day from 10.00am-4.00pm. Attractions include cattle, sheep and ponies, as well as demonstrations and exhibits including sheep shearing and vintage machinery. A traditional live Geese and Poultry auction takes place at 2.00pm, and a variety of local trade stands will be selling food, drink and local crafts.
