First-timer here.

I am considering Tavistock as a location, should I move to the area in the near future. Everything I've seen in my research so far suggests it's the type of town that will appeal to me but I'd be very interested in some honest opinions as to what the potential negative side of life in the area is!

If there's a facility here to privately send me some info, you may prefer to do that :-)

Colin - It depends on where you live now. Many people would look at the negatives there and turn that into looking for the opposite here. Is that what you are doing? Without family composition or other needs, it would be difficult to supply general negatives, as it depends on what you are used to. The only cloud on the horizon is that West Devon Borough Council are intent on introducing Urban Sprawl comprising 750 dwellings. The system is going through the motions, but it looks like a done deal. Barring the puppet show, sorry the public inquiry...

I realised after I'd posted that I should have explained myself a little better.

Single bloke, late 40's, currently living in Hertfordshire but considering relocating for a lifestyle change as much as anything else. If agreement can be reached on a new job (in progress), then I'll be looking to move to the area within the next 2 months.

I have simple tastes, so as long as I have access to reasonable shops, a little culture and a broadband connection, I'll be happy. Plus, of course, a more outdoor-type lifestyle and the hope that I can become part of a community, which is the main point!

Maybe this all sounds too idealistic but the reason for my original question was that if I can handle any major negatives, I'm good to go.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Colin,

To be honest I really can't think of any negatives about the area! It's a great town, and generally the residents are really friendly. There's lots going on for you to get involved with, and it's a fantastic area for outdoor pursuits. The shops in the area are reasonable and you can purcahse most things locally. If you do fancy a night out or a bigger shopping trip then there's always Plymouth which is only half an hour away. If there's anything specific you want to know then just ask and I'll try to answer :)

Oh, and we do have Broadband, but it's not as fast as in other areas of the country. Perfectly adequate though.

Colin - Thanks for the update. No negatives that I can think of in your circumstances. I normally can otherwise ;)). Broadband is OK within the close radius of Tavistock Telephone Exchange - How they gave permission for that design is another matter. It must be one of the ugliest Telephone Exchanges in the Country. Broadband is just about usable in some area, mainly due to the quality and condition of the overhead copper wires. There is lack of push and wiliness for West Devon Borough Council to look at this for community well-being and business use. They banter words that may cause some people to think they are doing something. I am sure they are fooling themselves as well. We need FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) to the surrounding Villages. I doubt the core of WDBC have a clue of what I am on about or any real interest.
