I find it beyond comprehension to read in today's Tavistock Times that West Devon B C are to close 3 of our public toilets all extremely essential, particularly one at the bus station of all places and another at Yelverton, where, disgusting as they are, at least dog walkers and other walkers have a public convenience whilst Tavistock Town Council are talking about spending £5,000 on celebrating a one day event . It is utterly crazy. Are we supposed to use the bushes or some hidden corner when in dire need?

Councils have lived on he fat of ever increasing Council Tax. West Devon Borough Council is a strange sort of Council. It is the stump of a see-saw that seems to see its part as bringing Urban Sprawl and as Recycling Kings. Against this background, the Public must be punished to save not just money but Jobs. Whether or not those Jobs came in the years when Labour were spending faster then they could think up taxes to collect it. With 3 Councils, matters get very cloudy, perhaps that is the point. But we need to safeguard what money Tavistock Town Council has and what it does with it. Not try and commit it to matters that West Devon Borough Council should provide from their budget. Because WDBC will just throw it at something else, more bins or bags perhaps?

My point is not to prop up WDBC so that they should keep the toilets open but to show the comparison between WDBC and Tavisrock T C . The one being prepared to spend £5000 frivolously whilst the other penny pinches to the detriment of the publics' physical needs.

Annapanna - I know you did. I was introducing other matters. While it may not seem it (to many) I actually support the purpose of many original postings (like I do yours), but go on to add another dimension. There are many multi hatted Councillors who are on several Councils, surely objection to this (closing toilets) should come through. then spending money elsewhere. But sadly it does not seem to. In areas with only One Council, matters are far more clearer and transparent. Lobbying and objection far easier. What Councillors actually believe, far simpler to gauge (even if it is just what their Party says they believe).

Sorry to be dim but I'm not sure what you meant. I think you had a mistype with 'then'. Did you mean 'should come through them than spending ---' or something else in the sentence 'surely objection to this ---?

I am certain you are not dim. Put it another way, most Councillors we have, serve on various Council Tiers and wear multiple hats. But may vote to take on toilets on one Council and get rid of them on another. If they stand only to run a budget and not attempt to change it. As a Voter it would be useful to know.
