On its own speed is not dangerous, it is when it is not appropriate that speed can lead to accidents.
When I start training someone I give them a number of simple rules to consider such as 'Always travel at a speed that you can see to stop' this means when entering a blind corner, slow down.
Lose a good view of the road ahead because of a large van or such like, slow down.
In another vein - I tell trainees, be prepared to reduce their speed by just 5 mph whenever a situation unfolds before them that they perceive may lead to harm. If the situation dissolves then they can bring the speed back up if appropriate.
This is not the total of their briefing just an extract.
