As we in the South West and UK, enter a new-year and climb the legacy economic mountains many people are seeking ways of reducing costs in their daily lives. Owning and running a car can be a tremendous part of a weekly or monthly budget so many are considering using two wheels as an economical transport alternative which will enable them to get to work or to simply get on with their daily lives.

Obviously the costs of running a bike or scooter are considerably lower than a car but many people worry about the hidden or additional costs such as the right type of clothing. Now, while suitability and safety, I’m sure you will agree, must be the first consideration it does not mean that it needs to be overly expensive, some essential equipment can be found at very reasonable prices.

For instance, helmet prices can range from £50 to over £500 but as long as it carries legal approval as indicated by the ECR 22-05 mark does it matter if it’s in last year’s colours?
What about warm layers, waterproofs, high - visibility clothes, gloves, boots or a jacket? (Note: steel toe boots are not recommended)

Try looking at some of these alternative sources: Group D, Cornwall Farmers, Trago Mills, eBay, even the local bikes shows have key items in discount buckets, etc., check our website tinyurl.com/yzeqsw2 for online sources that we have researched and found useful.

Just remember not to compromise safety, take the required training and maybe a bit more if it ensures you become competent.
