Tavistock Student Named Young Sailor of the Year

A 16 year old Tavistock College student has been named Young Sailor of the Year.
Saskia Sills, 16 from Launceston was presented with the prestigious YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award for 2012 at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday.
Principal of Tavistock College, Helen Salmon has said: "We are so proud of Saskia and her achievements on the water and in school. Her balance between her studies and sailing is perfect. She is a role model for everyone at Tavistock College and we know she has inspired many others to work hard and achieve their goals."
Saskia Sills said: "I feel really privileged to have been given this award as I was nominated alongside many other very talented individuals. I am so happy to have won. I've had a great year winning some big events which took a few people by surprise."
Saskia has made a huge impact in her first season in the Youth RS:X class. After winning the 2012 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships in April, she finished third overall in the RS:X Youth European Windsurfing Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, winning the Under 17 category. She quickly followed that up with victory at her first ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland and another gold at the EUROSAF Youth Europeans. She also claimed the under 17 world title in addition to overall silver at the at the RS:X Youth Worlds last October.
Saskia was recently nominated for ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards alongside Olympic and Paralympic medallists.
The YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year award was first presented in 1993. Early winners include Dame Ellen MacArthur and Sir Ben Ainslie, who both went on to win the Yachtsman of the Year title. This year's title winner will be announced in London on 15 January and finalists for this prestigious title are: Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie, World match-racing champion Ian Williams and Gold Paralympic medallist and ISAF 2011-12 Sailing World Cup Champion Helena Lucas MBE.
