The College is delighted to be introducing Accelerated Reader to all year 7 students from October. This signifies a considerable investment of resources, time and money to ensure literacy, and in particular reading for pleasure, is at the forefront of the school curriculum.
Accelerated Reader Scheme
Accelerated promotes reading for pleasure and encourages pupils to use reading to learn.
- Motivate pupils of all ages and abilities to read more and better books
- Directs students' book selections and encourages on-going reading practice
- Raise literacy standards amongst all pupils of all abilities
- Develops a lifelong love of reading in students
Every student has undertaken initial screening to assess their current reading capabilities so that they are directed to the correct books to read; each student is also set an individualised points target for each term.
All year 7 students read during tutor time, in English lessons and are encouraged to use the library independently throughout the school day but now there is an added incentive! For every book read under the Accelerated Reader scheme, students take an online quiz to check their understanding and enjoyment of the book; successful completion of the quiz earns a student points and points mean prizes.
We are really keen for parents to get involved too so they have their very own section of the website which enables them to see the books their son/daughter has read and is currently reading along with information about how well he/she has done on individual book quizzes. A very useful tool for parents is the AR book finder tool which allows them to see if any named book is at the correct level for their child or to see a list of recommendations of books that are.
Whilst it is currently only our Year 7 students who are using Accelerated Reader, we will be rolling this out to all key stage 3 students over the next 2 years. As a college, we are very excited about the opportunities Accelerated Reader offers and look forward to celebrating student successes throughout the coming year.
