A drizzly Sunday morning was brightened up when Launceston saw nearly 250 people don their Santa Suits and run 2km around the town all in aid of Children's Hospice South West (CHSW) on their 1st ever Santas on the Run fun run in Launceston.
Throughout the morning the town square was filled with festive songs from Launceston Junior Infants School choir and some lively Samba music from the school Samba Band getting everyone in the spirit for a fantastic event. The Town Square filled up with friends, colleagues and entire families including dogs dressed for the occasion who were all getting ready for the run, with the youngest participant being just 8 months old!
After a warm up by Matt Luxton of FA Fitness and a countdown, is was on your marks, get set and Santas were on the Run! The fantastic festive spectacle could be seen all around the town as Santas ran the circular route from the Square, up Windmill Hill, through Coronation Park, down Race Hill, through Southgate Arch, along Castle Street and through the picturesque Castle grounds, finishing back at the Town Square.
On their return Santas were greeted with a medal and festive treat as they celebrated with each other that they had completed the route. Launceston Town Crier announced that the Santas had pledged over £4,500 in sponsorship and this really shows what can be achieved when a great community gets behind events like this for such a worthwhile.
Events Fundraiser Sarah Stott from CHSW said "We are delighted with the success of the first ever Santas on the Run and Launceston and would like to thank everyone in town who got behind the event. A fantastic amount of sponsorship was raised for which we really are grateful, especially at this special time of year. We would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help on the day with marshalling including members of the Lions Club of Launceston, Launceston Volunteer First Aid Services, and the Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response Team for helping us keep everyone safe, so a huge thank you to them."
Thanks also go to all of the shops who opened especially on Sunday for the event so that participants could enjoy some Christmas shopping as well as grab a coffee in the comfort or the warm and dry!
The Launceston Santas on the Run event was generously sponsored by The Ocean Group Ltd who also supported the event in St Austell a couple of weeks ago.
The vital funds raised from the fantastic sponsorship gained from Santa's on the Run will go towards the care and support provided to families with children who have life limiting conditions and need the hospice's support for planned respite breaks as well as emergency and end of life care. £4,500 will go a long way to helping sustain the care and support that can be offered to families who use Little Harbour; CHSW's 'Hospice by the Sea'.
