Parking charges in Tavistock look set to be frozen

West Devon Borough Council looks set to freeze parking charges in all Council-owned car parks for the second consecutive year and to cut the price of its annual car park season tickets.
The Council's Environment and Community Committee is making the recommendations after consulting a working party of parish and town councils and business organisations in the borough.
Cllr Robert Oxborough, Chairman of the Committee, said that the Council is listening to the needs of its local businesses and residents and it wanted to maintain the fairest deal possible for car park users despite the challenging economic climate.
The Committee is also recommending that the costs of its annual car park season tickets should be cut – in some ticket bands by as much as 40% - matching 2007 prices.
For example, an annual season ticket for any Tavistock town centre car park would be reduced from £720 to £400 a year and in rural council-owned car parks would be cut from £180 to £155 a year.
Cllr Oxborough added: "We hope that by freezing our charges and by cutting the cost of the season tickets we will be helping our residents and businesses during these challenging times.
"The proposed reduction in the season ticket costs is a significant concession to all car park users, particularly to business owners and town centre workers. It really is great value for money.
"There is a strong desire to encourage people to use their local businesses and shops and we hope these proposals will ensure this continues as well as protect our town centre workers from any increases in costs."
The recommendation goes before the Council at its next meeting on February 14.
