Police dealt with some speeding offences and noise complaints, but said there were no arrests during the gathering outside the B&Q store on Tavistock Road on Saturday.
Officers have called on organisers to warn them of cruises in advance in future, after units had to be pulled in from outside the city.
About 500 cars and an estimated 1,000 people arrived from all over Devon and Cornwall from about 8pm.
Police said they noticed several high-performance and modified vehicles, some travelling in convoy, heading into Plymouth. Some vehicles were stopped and checked.
Officers also received complaints about the noise of revving engines from nearby residents in Derriford.
But acting sergeant Ryan Canning said the drivers gradually dispersed throughout the evening, some heading to the city centre and others leaving Plymouth.
He added: "We are more than happy for people to have car cruises. The enthusiast are people who always have driving licences and documents in order. Their cars are immaculate and they take pride in their vehicles.
"Some of them succumb to a bit of peer pressure maybe, and tend to speed.
"It would help us if they could get in touch and we could maybe help find a suitable location for them to meet."
Sgt Canning said drivers cruised around the car park, and looked over each other's vehicles.
One of the event organisers, who did not want to be named, said he would be willing to liaise with police before a meeting – which he said happened in other areas.
The man added: "Everything went well. If we could find somewhere big enough that would be great. At the moment, this is about the biggest place we can find."
He said police turned some drivers away because the car park was full.
The organiser added: "The police did not pick on us. They checked everyone was all right and we just looked at each other's cars."
Cruises are held monthly around the region, with the largest gatherings held every six months in Plymouth. They are organised by clubs and through social networking sites.

ReportFirst of all for all of the guys that say it was just a load of chavs in cars who turned up.... Don't see many chavs driving around Ford Focus RS do you? or maybe a brand new subaru impreza? or a vauxhall vxr8? yes there are some small kitted up cars that are there but so what? I don't see why the police and people have such a problem with this.... its not like were out racing on the streets, we are just sitting in a car park and looking at each other peoples cars. It was a bit sad that the police were recording cars pulling away. Kinda ruined the event a bit, also giving some guy a section 59 for doing a burnout. This type of stuff is what happens at car cruises. Why cant they just leave us to it?

What a nasty and possibly jealous person you are. No wonder the youth of today think they have no prospects when they read comments like yours.
