The head line pass rate rose by a massive 17% from 56% last year to 73% this year. The key pass rate for 5 A*-Cs including English and Maths has also shot up by 16% from 48% last year to 64% this year.
This is well above the national average and it puts Tavistock College back on the road to success. Principal Helen Salmon commented that this success was down to the hard work of staff and students and the support of parents.
Almost a third of the Year group 31% achieved 3 A*/A grades and a fifth of students 19% gained 5 A*/A grades. Performance was particularly strong in the core subjects of English and Maths. Every student at the College gained a qualification and the A*-G pass rate was 100%.
There were some very strong individual performances:
Eliza Austin Hill gained 4A*, 4A and 2Bs
Luke Austin gained 4A* and 6As
Mabel Barclay gained 2A* and 6As
Peter George gained 6A* and 3As
Catherine Jones gained 8A* and 1A
Beth Kingman gained 8 A* and 2As
Sarah McGahey gained 3A* and 5As
Jessica Quinn gained 8A* and 2As
College Principal Helen Salmon commented: "We are absolutely delighted to see this uplift in our results. It is most encouraging that more students are being successful and that Tavistock College is heading back to its rightful place as one of the highest achieving schools in Devon. If this level of uplift can be achieved in one year, the College can now build on this and really go places."
All of the above students will be progressing on to the Tavistock College sixth form, and will be entering the college's new ASPIRE programme. The focus of the programme is to get more young Tavistock people into prestigious universities, and will include a residential in London, and a series of master classes & voluntary opportunities.
There have been comments in the media today implying that schools have pushed 'easier' subjects to boost their achievement levels. Helen Salmon commented that statements like this unfairly detract from the hard work that students put in. She was keen to stress that the college's marks were achieved by a concentration on the core academic subjects - not by a dumbed down curriculum. She added that today's results show that Tavistock College is bouncing back and looking to the future.
Students comments include:
"I'm Very happy and very surprised" - Peter George
"All the hard work has really paid off" - Beth Kingman
"The 2 years of hard work have really paid off" - Luke Austin
"I'm Glad all my efforts have paid off; these results open up lots of opportunities in the future" - Mabel Barclay
"I feel very happy with my achievements" - Will Razey
"I'm Overwhelmed, shocked and very, very pleased. The school did well to help me through it" - Tom Stoneham

I actually got 4A*s and 7A's (thats if you change the Merit in ICT to the equivalent grade of an A!)
I'm worried they have got others wrong too though, if they have its not really fair on us!
