Sunday 02 October

South West Women's League (Div 1 West)

Callington (0) Vs Stoke Gabriel (1)

After two wins in a row Callington went into Sunday's game looking for all three points, but despite a valiant effort from the home side it was the visiting Stoke Gabriel that managed to claim the game.

Stoke grabbed the decisive goal on the half hour mark when some indecision in Callington's defence allowed their striker to slot the ball home from a tight angle.

Although Stoke were the dominant side for the first forty-five minutes, and arguably deserved to be in front at the break, the second half was an entirely different story. Callington had the lions share of possesion and pushed hard for the equaliser. They came close to grabbing it on a number of occasions, and a handful of efforts from Town striker Sasha Cameron were either saved by the Stoke keeper or went just narrowly wide of the goal.

Winger Kate Bourn almost levelled the scores when her header from eight yards out went just past the post. Substitute Becky Church also had a good chance in the dying stages but could not find a solid connection on her shot.

The visitors had a good chance to double their lead with five minutes remaining, but a superb save from Callington keeper Sara Rowe was enough to stop a fierce free kick from flying into the top corner.

After the game, Callington Manager Adam McPherson said: "We were disappointed that we didn't come away from this game with at least a point. The effort from the team was excellent and we gave them a much tougher test than we did when we played them earlier in the season. I could not have asked any more of the players in terms of their effort. It was just that little bit of extra quality in front of goal that was lacking in the end."

Callington travel to table-topping Launceston next Sunday.
